About the Artist
How long have you been working in art/design, what do you specialize in, have you won any other awards?

I am a student currently studying in NanyangJunior College in Singapore. I do not have an official art background like most my peers do. I only began to pursue my childhood interest this year by taking art as a subject in school. My school is a pre-university educational institute established in 1978 that prepares us for taking the GCE'A Levels Examinations, it is also one of the Art Elective Programme centers and it has been very active in the art and design field, my seniors have clinched several awards ranging from poster design to painting.

I consider myself to be relatively new to the art and design scene with less than 2 years of experience. Hence, I am amateur and newbie in this field, I have a lot more to learn and explore. I began to venture into digital art and photography last year, and I think these two are my niche areas at the moment.

Currently, I think my more notable achievements are a distinction in this year's UOB Painting of the Year Competition, 2nd in Open Category for the Istana On-the-Spot Art Competition and promotional video I have made being chosen for the Asian Kids Exhibition held in Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.

About the winning entry
My work, "Epitome of Asia Pacific" is putting together the whole of Asia Pacific in one place in harmony and presenting the richness of Asian Pacific culture. Different architecture, different lifestyles, different costume... but united as one.

The Process
I began working on it on paper first, sketching and drawing compositions and really draft outlines on my sketchbook and deciding which one is the best and start working on the computer. On the computer I would sketch out the draft outlines and start painting and drawing the work digitally with Corel Painter IX.5. Most of the work was done with that software. It took me one weekend to finish drawing the overall, buildings, landscape and the people. Then I would polish up the work and add in the effects. Finally alter the contrast and saturation of the piece with Photoshop Elements or CS2 to give it a warm feeling with rich colours. My pen tablet has been an essential tool in the piece's creation.

Q&A

Where did you get the idea for this entry?
It strike me on my way home from school, and upon reaching home, I quickly sketch out the compositions on my sketchbook and refine the idea. My country's multiculturalism has a major influence on my idea.

Why did you use this theme?
I chose this theme because I felt it it's the only one that provides the opportunity to showcase the richness and diversity of Asia Pacific.

Tips for other artists (for tips/tricks)

Do you use the pen tablet with a mouse or just a pen tablet?
I enjoy using the tablet more than the mouse, some of the tasks like setting colours or applying filters still goes to the mouse though.

Is there any special way that the pen is different from the mouse in the software that you use?
The tablet allows better control on what I want to draw compared to the mouse. Besides, it feels more natural, like using pen to sketch with the tablet compared to the mouse.

How do you program the buttons on the pen and the buttons on the tablet?
I don't program the buttons of the tablet; I use the tablet as it is.

Do you work only on computers? If not, what other types of art tools do you use? How are they better or worse than the pen tablet?
I do work on other medium besides digital and ink is one of my favorites, I kind of like painting with acrylic too. The difference between digital and the traditional is that firstly I can get almost all the colours I want on digital. Secondly, it's neater with digital, since the tablet, the mouse and the computer is all I need, no need to get stained by acrylic paints or scrap off dried up paint on the palette. It's economical too, long term, because I do not need to purchase pens or paints with digital. Last but not least, digital allows me to do much more stuff, with layering or filter or gradient which would be more tedious with the traditional medium and sometimes, almost impossible to accomplish. However, traditional media still have its unique features that I like, which digital media don't have.

Please tell us about your school and some favorite websites

The school has been an important part in my drive towards art. The school has been very supportive too. I am one of the lucky ones who were able to travel to Fukuoka, Japan for an exchange programme subsidized by the school; the aim of the exchange programme is to make a promotion video for the Asian Kids Exhibition by FukuokaAsianArt Museum. My friends and teachers have some degree of influence on my works. Besides that, I am fortunate to have three experienced and supportive art teachers who gave me invaluable advice and guidance. It is in NYJC where I got inspired and motivated by my senior to venture into digital art and it is in NYJC where the Photographic Society got me really interested in photography. My school's website is http://www.nanyangjc.org/

One website which I really enjoyed visiting is http://drawn.ca/
